Beachwood Boredom-Busters: P.S. for Canines Edition (8/21/19)

The audition requirements for the upcoming Beachwood Community Theater production of “Matilda” are  available on our website. Prepare a monologue, 32 bars of a song, and bring your sheet music & headshot. Director Jill Koslen-Freireich welcomes actors from third grade through adulthood!

As always, there are some outstanding events happening in our City this week.

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 21

Be sure to sign up to attend DIVAS OF THE '70s with our Upperclassmen travelers. The bus will depart at 11:15 AM on Thursday, Sept. 12 and will return at approximately 4:30 PM. The cost ($78 residents/$81 non-residents) includes lunch, the program, and transportation but not the driver’s gratuity. Boogie on town to the Villa Croatia Party Center with us! 2:00 – 4:00 PM: Experience “An American Story” and enjoy an informative and inspiring look at what it takes to survive and thrive in a new country. Today's drop-in tours are led by knowledgeable volunteer docents at the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage (2929 Richmond Rd.) and are included with your general-admission ticket, available online and in-person.

THURSDAY, Aug. 22

11:00 AM – 2:00 PM: Today’s stretchy-pants-required EATS AND MEETS food-truck lunch behind the Orlean Company (23875 Commerce Park) features the vegan food stylings of MoBites (sample menu here) and the sweet deliciousness of Beachwood’s own Ellie May’s Gourmet Cookies (sample menu here). Eats and Meets is presented by the Beachwood Chamber of Commerce

7:00 – 8:00 PM: The Beachwood Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library (25501 Shaker Blvd.) presents “Safe at Home: Home Security for the New Age.” Learn about new security technology as well as time-tested security basics, including: Life Alert systems, home monitoring, video surveillance, how to avoid accidents, and strategies to make your home more safe and secure. Free and open to the public with registration

8:00 PM: Bogey’s Comedy Club at Embassy Suites by Hilton Cleveland Beachwood (3775 Park East Drive) presents the infinitely entertaining comedian and magician Eric Thompson! The featured comedian is Jerry Jaffe and your host is Kirk Bogos. Tickets are $15 if you get them online in advance.

FRIDAY, Aug. 23

10:00 – 11:00 AM: Have you heard of Viktor Schreckengost? He may be the most prolific artist and industrial designer you’ve never heard of (here's a hint...)! Join art historian Felicia Zavarella Stadelman as she presents a series on the lives & works of beloved artists. Sponsored by the Friends of the Beachwood Library – Registration preferred.

SATURDAY, Aug. 24

8:30 – 9:30 AM: Healthy Strides… Come Walk with Us! combines a casual 1-3 mile walk at Beachwood Place (26300 Cedar Road), preceded by a brief informative talk by Cleveland Clinic Physicians and Caregivers. This program is free and open to the public and no registration is required. More information is available here

10:00 – 11:00 AM: Commit2Fit at Burn Boot Camp Beachwood (24018 Chagrin Blvd.) by attending their kick-off party. Staff will be on-hand to show you around, explain what to expect for the next six weeks of the Commit2Fit challenge, and help set you up for success. Samples and raffle prizes will be given away! 

MONDAY, Aug. 26

If you or someone in your family is coping with cancer, The Gathering Place (23300 Commerce Park) would like to invite you all to attend a magic show for families with children this afternoon. TUESDAY, August 27

10:00 AM – 2:00 PM: Need a job? Stop by the DoubleTree by Hilton Cleveland East Beachwood (3663 Park East Drive) for the Jobnewsusa.com Cleveland Job Fair. Parking and admission are free of charge. Register online or learn more here.

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 28

7:00 – 9:00 PM: Did you know that in 2000, Bellefaire JCB established the Monarch School for Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), becoming the first chartered school specifically for children with ASD? Now known as the Monarch Center for Autism, it provides services to more than 200 people, ranging from preschool to supported living to adult programming. P.S. A special message for all Beachwood canines: Has your owner secured your key fob for Barkwood yet? Have them visit the Community Services Department at City Hall (25325 Fairmount Blvd.) between 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM. Here is the information they’ll need to have on-hand. The official Barkwood Grand Opening is Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2:00 PM. Hope to see you (and your people) there!
