In response to residents’ requests, Beachwood City Council is considering revisions to our ordinance and restrictions allowing residents to have chickens. The proposed legislation – entitled “Keeping of Fowl” – would allow residents who meet certain requirements to have up to four chickens (excluding roosters.) The birds would have to be housed at all times in a structure no larger than four feet by four feet and enclosed on all sides and on top. That structure is to be located not less than 20 feet from rear or side yard boundaries. The proposed legislation puts the structure in the rear of the house only. Additional revisions to the proposed legislation are being considered following a Dec. 7 public hearing on the issue.
Council has requested some language changes and is also considering an amendment requiring a permit be obtained by anyone wanting to have chickens. Beachwood City Council is scheduled to further consider the legislation when it meets Jan. 19, 2016.
Residents with questions or comments should contact Beachwood City Council and/or the mayor’s office.
