[ARCHIVED] Beachwood City Schools Partners with University Hospitals - Medical Academy will be Formed

Beachwood City Schools and University Hospitals recently announced the formation of a partnership to establish a rigorous four-year, science-based curriculum designed to prepare Beachwood high school students for professional careers in medicine. The UH-Beachwood High School Medical Academy will create a seamless academic program that blends traditional Honors and Advanced Placement course work at Beachwood High School with internships, credit-flex studies, augmented summer course work, and structured experiences at multiple sites within the UH system.

“Access to UH resources will greatly strengthen and enhance our students’ ability to apply academic content to the practice of medicine,” said Dr. Richard A. Markwardt, Superintendent of Beachwood City Schools. “We are fortunate to have a local health care provider that is capable of offering the rich range of learning opportunities that UH brings to the table.”

This unique educational partnership represents a first-of-its-kind collaboration between a major health system and a public school system. Medical Academy students will be enrolled in academically-demanding pre-med college programs and will have a distinct academic advantage upon graduation.

Beachwood City Schools and UH have applied to the Ohio Department of Education for Straight A Fund dollars to hire a part-time coordinator to assist with initial curriculum and program development beginning in January 2014. Classes for freshman and sophomore students are scheduled to begin in the Fall of 2014.

“The UH-Beachwood High School Medical Academy is an outstanding example of a unique, one-of-a-kind public-private partnership that goes well beyond the norm. Beachwood City Schools and University Hospitals are to be commended for this,” said Mayor Merle S. Gorden. “The City of Beachwood has a long, successful history of collaboration with our fine public school system. We stand ready to assist and support this partnership.”
