Store It Safe

A Commitment to Safe Firearm Storage

The City of Beachwood is the first Store It Safe City designated by the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (Ohio AAP). This recognition highlights Beachwood's commitment to firearm safety and its proactive efforts to protect children and adolescents from unintentional injuries and firearm-related suicides.

About Store It Safe

In response to the growing number of firearm injuries among children, Ohio AAP established the Store It Safe program in 2015. The initiative unites organizations and individuals from various perspectives on firearm ownership to develop unified, nonpartisan messaging, resources, and strategies to prevent injuries and deaths. The program has expanded to address firearm-related suicides among adolescents and now includes a wide range of educational, advocacy, and community-driven initiatives.

Mayor Justin Berns

"We are honored to be recognized as the first Store It Safe City. This designation highlights Beachwood's commitment to protecting our residents, particularly children and adolescents, through education and proactive safety measures. We aim to create a safer community for all families by fostering awareness and encouraging responsible firearm storage."

Sarah Denny, MD

"Ohio AAP is thrilled to partner with the City of Beachwood to create the first-ever Store It Safe City designation. Since Store It Safe was created in 2015, Ohio AAP and our partners have provided safe firearm storage counseling to more than 90,000 families and distributed over 2,500 safe storage devices. By partnering with local communities like the City of Beachwood, we can take these conversations outside of the healthcare setting and expand our reach to new audiences, reinforce our messaging and education around the critical importance of safe firearm storage, and provide families with a variety of suicide prevention resources.”

Beachwood’s Commitment to Firearm Safety

As a Store It Safe City, the Beachwood Police Department will lead community education efforts on the importance of securely storing firearms at home. These initiatives will be delivered through multiple channels, ensuring a proactive approach to preventing intentional and unintentional firearm injuries. To extend the program's impact, the Beachwood Police Department and City Administration will collaborate with the Beachwood School District to provide students and parents with Store It Safe educational content and resources.
