Purpose:
The purpose of the Architectural Board of Review shall be to preserve and protect the public health, safety and welfare by maintaining the high character of community development and protecting the real estate and its value in the city from impairment or reduction of value by regulating, according to architectural principles, the design, use of materials, finished grade lines and orientation of all new buildings, and by assuring that the appearance and aesthetics of building exteriors reasonably conform to city standards found in the area of the proposed building or addition to an existing building.
The Architectural Board of Review reviews plans for only the items listed below:
- Commercial: New buildings, alterations, accessory structures, signage, and ground solar panels.
- Residential: New houses, additions, exterior alterations, accessory structures, and ground solar panels.

Membership & Terms
Membership of the Architectural Board of Review consists of the Building Commissioner, the City Planner, and one additional member who shall be appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by Council. Current members of the Architectural Board who are not the appointed members shall serve as alternate members until the expiration of their terms. The appointed member of the Architectural Board of Review shall be a registered architect, duly registered and authorized to practice architecture in and under the laws of the State of Ohio and shall have been actively engaged in the general practice of architecture as a registered architect in the State of Ohio for a period of not less than three years prior to appointment to the Board. The term for members of the Architectural Board of Review shall be three years.
