Thinking about a generator after a recent power outage?

Here are some tips from Beachwood's Building Department to ensure safe installation!

  1. Always get multiple quotes to find the best company and price point for your project.
  2. Verify the contractor is registered with the city by calling the Building Department at 216-292-1914 or request a list of currently registered contractors.
  3. It is recommended that the contractor obtains the required permits. This must be done prior to installation.
  4. Verify that your contractor has obtained these three required permits.
    • Electrical Permit
    • Gas Permit
    • Zoning Permit - Per ordinance a generator must be on the side or rear of the house and screened from view

What’s needed for a generator permit?

  • Electrical - Line drawing showing locations of electrical equipment, wire and pipe sizes, grounding plus the manufactures installation instructions.
  • Gas - Size of pipe, line drawing indication pipe path from meter to generator, and verification gas meets requirements of the manufacture.
  • Zoning - Overhead view of the generator location, window and vent pipe locations, distance to property lines and dwelling, type of screening to be used and date screening will be installed.

What inspections are required with a generator permit?

  • Verify inspections are performed by a Beachwood Building Department inspector. Inside and outside inspection is required as well as a load test of the generator.
